Rita Provatas

Attorney Rita Provatas practices primarily in the areas of Immigration Law and Civil Litigation.

Rita Provatas has been appointed to the Cambridge Who’s Who Registry of Executive And Professional Women 2010/2011 and listed in the 2007 edition of Who’s Who of Executives and Professionals. Before joining the firm, Attorney Provatas spent several years in Washington DC serving as a law clerk in the DC Court of Appeals and the US District Court for the District of Columbia, and as an Associate at the law firm of Keck, Mahin & Cate, where she honed her skills as a trial attorney. She returned to her native New London, where she has continued to practice law for the past 19 years.

Attorney Provatas focuses a majority of her practice on immigration and nationality matters. She represents employers and employees in obtaining employment related visas and permanent resident status, and family members in obtaining permanent resident status and US citizenship. Attorney Provatas also represents foreigners in removal proceedings before the Immigration Court and Bureau of Immigration Appeals. Her clients vary amongst individuals and start up and mid size companies to major Fortune 500 companies. She has been particularly successful in fashioning work programs that allow employers to obtain temporary overseas employees in job positions that have become increasingly difficult to staff.

A large part of her professional time is also spent on preparing civil cases for trial, mostly on behalf of the plaintiffs. She handles a variety of civil cases including personal injury claims, property disputes, and breach of contract cases.

Attorney Provatas graduated Bates College with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in English in 1983. In 1986, she graduated from the University of Bridgeport School of Law, where she was the Executive Managing Editor and author for the Law Review and a recipient of the American Jurisprudence Book Award in Family Law.

Professional Memberships/Associations
In addition to the membership in the Bar of the State of Connecticut, Attorney Provatas is admitted to the Bar of the following states and courts: the states of New York and Virginia; the US District Court for the District of Connecticut; the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia; and the Supreme Court for the State of Connecticut.

Attorney Provatas is an active member of the American Immigration Law Association (“AILA”) national and Connecticut Chapters and currently serves as the Chapter Chair for the Connecticut Chapter. She speaks and writes often on immigration law and policy for various organizations including AILA, CT AILA, the Connecticut Bar Association and numerous local advocacy groups and church groups. She is also a board member of Hispanic Alliance, a nonprofit organization, serving the Hispanic Community in New London, Ct; a Mentor and Sponsor of the Catholic Charities Law Clinic, New London, CT Chapter; a member of Rotary International in the town of Waterford, having served as its President in 2006; a member of the Waterford Democratic Town Committee; a member of the Women’s Network of Southeastern Connecticut; the New London County Bar Association and Team Manager for U15 Boys Southeastern Connecticut Premier Soccer Club.

Rita Provatas also enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons, traveling and attending their soccer games, swim meets and school events. She is an avid gardener and cook and a devoted dog owner.
